Stand out as a Supply Teacher
If you want to be offered plenty of work as a supply teacher, particularly longer periods of work such as maternity or sickness cover, then you need to build a good reputation in the area you work. Word will usually get around schools about a good (or bad) supply teacher, and making a good impression is vital to get plenty of work.
Turning up on time (or preferably little early to get up to speed) and being well presented are an obvious place to start. It’s better to be overdressed than to look scruffy as different heads may have different expectations of their staff. Make sure you work to any planning provided by the class teacher as it’s frustrating to have to catch up later. You should also be sure to mark any work done, don’t forget you’re earning more per day than the class teacher and you shouldn’t be expecting to turn up and coast through the day. Finally, leave the class room as you found it as the class teacher won’t appreciate having to tidy up first thing in the morning!
