Teaching students in their final school year
Teaching students who are soon to be sixth formers, or perhaps workers, or college students is a tough ask. It’s the last chance to equip them with the skills they need to make their next step, whatever it may be.
And because the final year students are older, does not mean they are easier to handle or control, come may have already decided what they want to do, and because it is not part of the curriculum, they will show no signs of interest, perhaps they will disrupt the class.
This is why it’s important to remove any disturbing individuals from the classroom if they do not show any signs of participation, because other children’s education (the ones who do want to learn) could be at risk.
The final years of school are a time to look at the next steps and a teacher should be able to provide them with possibilities, and be there to help them make decisions that can benefit their future, and this should all be considered if you are thinking about teaching students in their final school year.
